Drama
Drama Clubs are offered to most
years in the school. Pupils explore
various theatrical techniques,
and focus on devising as well
as scripting performances. The
sessions are fast, furious and most
of all fun. Drama club helps pupils
to develop socially and artistically.
Music
Birkdale has an enviable reputation in the City of Sheffield for
outstanding music making and instrumental performance. Choirs,
Brass Bands, Jazz and Saxophone Ensembles, Big Band, Wind Groups,
String Orchestras and Guitar combinations - just to name but a few
of our weekly groups - are led by our first-rate music faculty.
Duke of Edinburgh
Most pupils take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme with
pupils involved from the third year (Year 9) upwards. This award
combines service, adventure and new skills for our students allowing
each to develop their own personal initiative and independence.
Young Enterprise
Birkdale School have a thriving Young Enterprise scheme run by
the Department of Economics & Business Studies for Lower Sixth
students (not necessarily studying Economics or Business Studies).
The scheme involves setting up a limited company and producing
goods and services for sale. We were named as a “Young Enterprise
Centre of Excellence 2012”.
Debating and Public Speaking
The Debating Society meets regularly to discuss powerful issues
relating to current affairs, ethics and the like. Sixth Form students
may go on to get involved with debating at the European Youth
Parliament Competition.
Academic Specialisms
Pupils have opportunities to attend academic clubs including: Art;
Science; Geography; History; DT; Classical Greek; Italian; Spanish;
Japanese; Computing; Psychology: Young Poets; Book and Math’s
enrichment.
Mandarin
Birkdale is one of a select number
of Schools to be recognised by the
Confucius Institute for its work in
promoting the study of Mandarin
Chinese and, in July 2013, was
awarded the coveted accolade of
becoming a Confucius Classroom.
Community Action
The community action programme which operates in the Sixth Form
allows the opportunity for charitable work and for developing a
sense of social responsibility.
