The Christmas Fair was an enormous success once
again this year. There were stalls selling ice cream,
sweets, second hand books and toys and there was a
very popular chocolate fountain. After browsing the
jewellery stalls and the second hand uniform stall, one
could sit down with a cup of tea and a mince pie and
enjoy the wonderful music provided by the boys. So
much hard work went into organising the event and
our thanks go out to all of the boys, parents and staff
who gave up their time to help, with special thanks
going to Mr Oakey. The fair raised just under £1500
for the school charity; Home Start Sheffield.
Christmas Fair
Charities And
Enterprise
We have enjoyed another very successful, and in some
cases record breaking, year of charity work in the Prep
School.
I can begin by confirming that a final total of £6313
was raised in 2010-11 for the Sheffield Children’s
Hospital Limb Reconstruction Service which was a
terrific effort by all.
This year’s Prep School charity has been Home Start
Sheffield, a project that provides support to families
in difficulty in and around our city. We have been
delighted to welcome Home Start to our two major
fairs this year and provide them with a venue for their
30
th birthday party. We know we have already raised
over £4000 with a number of key events still to come.
Charities weeks have seen the usual fund raising ideas
being enjoyed including non uniform days, playground
games and cake sales. The Christmas Fair benefited
from the new Prep School reception area providing
more space for this ever expanding event.
The fair was supported by a number of Prep 4 enterprise
groups. The chocolate fountain proved popular, as did
the pick ‘n’ mix stall. Food Fighters also sold well as
these enterprise groups helped push the funds raised
up to nearly £1500.
The Summer Fair and Olympics Day will also add to the
fun to be had this year and will boost the final total to
be sent to the school charity.
As always we have supported a number of other
initiatives throughout the year. It has been a record
breaking year for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes
as we amassed a total of 227 boxes to be sent out to
orphanages in Eastern Europe. 175 presents were also
collected for disadvantaged children in our own region
through the Hallam FM Cash for Kids project.
A new idea was introduced in the Easter term in
support of Oxfam’s Collect at Work Scheme. Our 89
bags of unwanted goods have been priced at a total of
£1290 which is a great result for our first venture into
this project.
In addition, we have continued to support Children In
Need and Sport Relief.
A very big thank you to all Birkdale families for the
continued support and commitment to charitable
giving. All your contributions are much appreciated.
A J Oakey
