The season began back in October with the Sheffield
Schools Football Leagues and English Schools Cup
competition. Three victories against Malin Bridge,
Sacred Heart and St Patrick’s saw the boys progress
to round two of the cup where, having drawn
against Nether Green and beaten Intake, they failed
to overcome a strong Marlcliffe School who would
eventually progress. In the Porter section of the
Sheffield League, Birkdale narrowly failed to qualify
for the city finals having finished runners up to Nether
Green. In addition to this the team took part in the
annual Mylnhurst 5-a-side Tournament. Once more
they finished runners-up, this time to St Thomas’. Sadly
the theme continued at the HMC Tournament. Having
battled hard through the group stages Birkdale found
themselves on the wrong side of a winner-takes-all
game against Newcastle for a place in the semi-finals.
The stand alone fixtures saw victories against local
rivals St Anselm’s and Barlborough Hall, a draw against
Silcoates and losses against Bradford Grammar and a
strong Stockport Grammar. Throughout the season
skipper Sam Yellops led the side well and remained
a calming influence at the back. Elsewhere there were
consistent performances from Sam Davison, Angus
Hackney and Josh Wilkie, while the improving Jabar
Bika might be someone to keep an eye on.

Two very impressive performances from the U10B
team showed the strength and depth we enjoy in the
Prep 3 age group. A powerful performance against
Silcoates School with a strong sporting tradition
was a particularly encouraging result. Maybe even
more striking was the 1 – 0 victory against Stockport
Grammar, a two-term football school. A terrific finish
by Shane Hardy and excellent goalkeeping by Tom
Clarke sealed the win.
This is a hard working, enthusiastic group of players
who will push and fight hard for places in the A team
for next year. This will only be good for the future
quality of Birkdale teams. Well done to all boys who
have represented the B team this season.

This has been a very enjoyable season and it was great
to see the boys loving playing football.
Convincing wins against Silcoates and St Anselm’s
came either side of a very close game against a very
strong Stockport Grammar side. Despite this loss, it
was great to see the lads put in such a determined
performance against a team playing their 23rd game
of the season!
The boys can look forward to many more opportunities
to play football as they move to the Senior School.
