Birkdale in
Nepal
The annual three week trip to Kathmandu took place once again
at Easter with 18 Birkdale students. Our pupils taught in the Peace
Garden School which was built and has been supported by Birkdale
since 2001, as well as in the nearby Noble and Bungamati Schools.
The trekking in the Himalayas and visit to Chitwan which lies in
the foothills of the Himalayas to the south of Nepal, were also very
memorable for the students, being both rich in flora and fauna. One
group on the trek got to the top of Poon Hill in sleet and snow and
unfortunately did not see the magnificent views - a situation not
experienced in 15 years!

Total Spanish immersion in
Salamanca
A group of S4/Y10 and S5/Y11 pupils had the opportunity to spend nine days in Salamanca in order to improve their language skills. They stayed
with families close to the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thus experiencing one of the most beautiful university cities in Old Castile
in central Spain.
They were participating in a custom made programme organised by the
Colegio Delibes
with five full mornings of lessons followed by
visits and activities in the afternoons and some evenings. These included engaging with local people as much as possible, as well as a cookery
lesson, tapas tasting and discovering the main monuments and museums of the city.
There was also a full day excursion to Avila, with its imposing medieval walls and Segovia which will be remembered by pupils not only for its
impressive Roman aqueduct with more than 170 arches but also for the chance to try the local speciality of
cochinillo
or roast piglet.

S2/3 (Y8/9) pupils spent five days in Cantabria on a very successful
Spanish language trip over the summer half term.
The boys immersed themselves in the language and culture of
Spain through a range of visits and activities, including a morning
spent in Puente Viesgo caves, home to some of the world’s oldest
cave art. El Solar torture museum was the highlight of a town trail
of Santillana del Mar, while the group appreciated the architecture
and magnificent beach in the ancient town of Comillas. Santoña
provided the boys with insight into Spanish culture in the form of
a bull ring and an anchovy factory, where the boys were shown the
intensive manufacturing process. The town trail in Santander was a
big hit, especially the churros con chocolate at the end!
Each evening, after an action packed day, the pupils completed
Spanish workbooks to consolidate their language learning.
