French A Level students worked for a week in a wide range of placements in St Malo. Two worked in the old walled city, which was
particularly busy with tourists, one at a wine merchants, the other at the well known Mère Poulard shop, while four students had the chance
to work in children’s holiday day camps. Two students were based at the Grand Aquarium in St. Malo and another student worked for the
Surf School helping to set up equipment for surfing, catamaran and land yachting. Others took the opportunity to maximise the use of their
French by working in restaurants and even a factory, making the typically Breton caramel butter. The students were praised for their hard
work as well as their efforts to improve their French.
Just before Christmas the Lower Sixth Spanish students joined
groups from Sheffield High School and King Edward’s School for
the 10
th
annual exchange visit to Palma, Mallorca, where they
stayed with students at San Josep Obrer School. They visited
the many historic sites in Palma itself as well as travelling to
Valdemossa, Alcudia and Sineu.
All the students made new friends, both English and Spanish.
They learned about Mallorcan Christmas customs and the
notorious ‘Caganer’ who finds his way into every Christmas crib.
21
pupils took part in the Modern Languages Department’s
four day study visit to Cologne in unseasonably mild and sunny
February weather. The aim of the visit is for students to work on
their language skills in a more authentic environment. This year,
they were lucky enough to experience the “Karneval” festivities in
Cologne, during which the Germans take to the streets in a variety
of colourful and imaginative costumes. Around the daily study
sessions in the hostel, the students took a cruise along the river
Rhine, discovered two small riverside towns, indulged in “Kaffee
und Kuchen”, took a trip up one of Cologne’s tallest buildings,
completed a rigorous shopping task in the city centre and visited
the Ruhr Industrial Museum in Essen.
