When Mrs Massey rings the bell at lunchtime on
Mondays a varying number of boys from PP1, 2 and
3
line up and come in for Christian Union. We watch
films - first about Jesus and now about Abraham.
We only watch a little bit at a time, then talk about
what happened and why it’s important.
After that we pray. We think about what we want to
say thank you for, and what we want to ask God to
help us with.
People say their prayer out loud if they want to and
anyone can join in. We hope you can come along next
term.
The PP1M Christian Union boys
I’ve got peace like a river; I’ve got joy like a fountain;
I’ve got love like an ocean in my soul. Mr ‘give us a
note’ Lockwood and Mr ‘I’ll do the actions’ Marsh lead
the boys in an unaccompanied rendition of a Christian
Union song.
Over the year we have thought about various ideas
in the Christian faith such as: the names of God,
metaphors in Philippians, happiness and encounters
in John’s Gospel.
We try to choose a film clip to illustrate a point which
has led to us watching modern clips from such as the
Madagascar films but also from old classics such as
Dad’s Army and Mr Benn. We try to find time to pray
as well.
Having taken inspiration from the Senior Christian
Union, Lower School CU (Quest) have engaged in
servant evangelism’ by providing free hot buttered
toast (with jam or lemon curd if wanted) for boys in
the lower school on Friday mornings before morning
registration.
This service has become a roaring success and many
boys now look forward to their second breakfast
(
although for some - this IS their breakfast!).
Many of the boys who enjoy the toast receive it
gratefully and then go off to get ready for their lessons,
but some stay behind and ask the obvious question,
why are you giving this away for free?’
Quest boys have several answers, but a favourite reply
goes something like this:
When Jesus sent out his followers to tell people about
him and heal the sick, he told them ‘freely you have
received; freely give’ (Matthew 10:8). We’re giving
away this toast in response to this, as a way of
showing God’s extravagant love.’
Regular members of the ‘Toast-Team’ include S2 boys:
Ben Palfreeman-Watt, Max Doody, Will Burch and Harry
Beach.
